still need dial-up? - If you still need dial-up internet access, then this modem will do the job. Having read around and discovered that external, hardware, serial modems were know for their reliability and stability, the next option was to opt for a well known manufacturer with an ongoing online support. I bought a used model, at a cut down price, and the device still works after obvious years of use.

Bonzer Modem - Had always steered clear of external modems as they take up space, require another plug socket for the independant power supply, don t look sexy and tend to be more expensive than an internal modem. However, having decided to install Linux Redhat 7.1 my internal PCI HCF modem was incompatible and basically redundant - can t even use it as an ashtray. In desperation I turned to the US Robotics 56K external Fax Modem. Despite being slightly put out by forking out £69.99 I was pleasantly reassured by the ease of installation under Linux (Recognized immediately on reboot) followed by no hassle dial up configuration in Gnome (5 stars). Also impressed by it s efficient operation (5 stars). I would have given it an overall 5 star rating but it still doesn t look sexy, takes up more desktop space and a plug socket.
